  • Submit the Documentary Screening

    October 18, 2013

    SubmitLogo

Last week, we had the privilege to share SUBMIT the Documentary with our community here in Santa Barbara.  After seeing the film this summer at UCSB and being moved by it’s powerful message, we decided to bring it back during National Bullying Prevention Month.  The Bacara Resort and Spa graciously hosted the screening in their beautiful theater. The event was attended by a wide variety of community members; parents, teachers, school board members, school resource officers, and church staff. Our hope is that this event sparked interest for ongoing conversations regarding issues of cyberbullying and school safety and that schools and other groups in our community (and beyond) will choose to screen SUBMIT the Documentary to spread the message of activating bystanders.

  • Kindness Challenge

    October 7, 2013

On September 11th I was reading through all of the Facebook posts and came across KindSpring.org.  They were launching a 21 day Kindness Challenge as a tribute to 9/11.  “6000 people, from 98 countries participated and lit up the world with thousands of kind acts and stories.” – KindSpring

    Video from KarmaTube

The Kindness Challenge offered a variety of ways to thread kindness into each of the 21 days.  Some tasks were easier than others.  I liked sending a card in the mail to let a friend know I was thinking of her but found reaching out to someone who I had lost touch with a little more difficult.  One day the challenge was to thank someone in public service so I got our mailman a Starbucks card.  His genuine smile of appreciation truly made my day!  From passing on a favorite book to leaving post it note messages of love to being intentional with a compliment, I found the daily challenges a terrific way to be mindful with kindness.  They say that once you do something 21 days in a row, it becomes habit forming.  I sure hope that I can be a little kinder throughout my days moving forward from this experience.  You can use this link to find all sorts of ideas for acts of kindness.

  • Kinder than is Necessary – “Wonder”

    August 27, 2013

Sprigeo was recently introduced to the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio through the The National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction.  About a week later, I was talking with another mom who randomly brought up this book and highly recommended it for my daughter who is just starting junior high school.  I downloaded it to my Kindle and started reading it that night.  I was hooked from the start and became attached to the compelling characters in this book, especially the main character, August.

  • Addressing Bullying at the Community Level

    June 18, 2013

    Child attending public school

Ken Ulman, Howard County Executive and Erin Reiney, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) wrote the following blog post on StopBullying.gov on July 17, 2013 about their community approach to bullying that Sprigeo is proud to be a part of:

We knew we needed to tackle bullying and cyber-harassment, after a few serious incidents focused our attention and raised awareness of these problems in our community. We examined current laws and discussed whether to push for new state legislation. We looked at how our public schools collect reports of bullying and later, how they handle them.
