    July 5, 2017

Kyle Makurat is described as “courageous” – Watch this awards assembly to learn more about his powerful video and why we have recognized Kye as one of our Heroes.

“You are truly an amazing person.  Your courage and persistence are inspiring!  Thank you for sharing your brilliance with the world! ” Joe Bruzzese, Sprigeo CEO.

On May 18th, 2017, Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired student Kyle Makurat was recognized during a school assembly for his production of a public service video, targeted at high school students and young adults, centered to the theme of “Why is CPR important to high school students and young adults?”

During the assembly, Kyle received the American Red Cross “Excellence in Social Change” Award and Heroes medal for his dedication to educate others about the importance of life-saving skills. The second award was the National Award of Excellence from Sprigeo and the third award was from his school to acknowledge his efforts toward being an Ambassador between the WCBVI and the community.

Kyle started at WCBVI after suffering a cardiac episode in 2009, collapsing while running on the school track at his middle school in Oshkosh. Three trained staff members immediately performed CPR on Kyle, saving his life and keeping him alive until the next level of care arrived on scene. CPR was again performed on Kyle while he was at the hospital. His mother saved his life a third time after collapsing in the shower. Thanks to her CPR knowledge his life was saved once again. The trauma of the cardiac arrest required Kyle to re-learn almost all life skills, including walking, talking and even how to chew food. Although he made a remarkable recovery, he still faced residual obstacles of a visual impairment, fine and gross motor struggles, difficulty producing intelligible speech and lapses in memory recall.

Here is the video that Kyle and David Perrodin, PhD created:
Thank you to David for introducing us to Kyle.
